Exchange Server Tools You Should Have

A really great thing about working with Exchange Servers is the huge amount of available support tools. For every area of administration or management, you can find tools—some commercial, and some free; that make your life easier. In fact, there are so many tools that sometimes it's hard to keep up with them. I have been deeply immersed in a contract role so I have been slow to discover two tools that are worthy of special note.

Dealing with bad and Poison Messages with Exchange

Badly formed messages are a constant bugbear; they might be malicious, or they might be generated by a buggy Message Transfer Agent. These messages could have a variety of side effects all of them unwanted!. I've seen messages that crashed the Exchange Transport or Information Store services, and many cases where an antivirus or antispam utility pegs the CPU at 100 percent when it encounters a particular message. You've probably seen the same thing in your environment; finding them and getting rid of them can be an annoying exercise, especially if you have to do it often.

Exchange Server Rollup

First up this week: Microsoft just released Update Rollup 3 (UR3) for Exchange 2007 SP1. Update rollups collect hotfixes that have been issued since the last service pack or rollup. UR3 contains a number of interesting fixes, including a way to remove the Sent by Microsoft Exchange 2007 tag line from delivery status notification messages. The complete list of fixes in UR3 is included in Microsoft Knowledge Base article 949870. There's also a new rollup, UR7, for sites using Exchange 2007 RTM; you can see its list of fixes in KB article 953469.
